Ausberry (Berry) and Millie Emery |
Joseph B. Emery came from Haywood County , North Carolina and it is believed that he came there from Virginia . He married a lady named Fannie, who lived and died near the Fannie Graveyard on the Hogback Road at the North Carolina line. He later homesteaded a section of land at Vaughns gap on Hogback Mountain .
He had a large family of boys and one of them was named Baez Emery. Baez (J.B.) Emery married Minerva Harrison Moss Emery. She lived at the Mitch Place ( Mitchell Harrison Place ) between Hoghead and Hogback Mountain .
J.B. and Minerva lived and reared their family near the branch crossing on the way to the Emery Lindsey Cemetery . The 1880 census listed J.B. Emery, age 43, farmer and his wife, Minerva, age 50 and also listed part of his family:
J.E. John, son, age 22
B.W. Berry (Asberry) age 19
J.P., son, age 15
M.E. daughter age 13 (known as Aunt Tee) she later married a Blackwell near Oak Grove Baptist Church .
H.L. Hoke, age 9 (Will Emery's father)
Both Berry and Hoke remained in the area where they were born.
Baez later married Narcissum Plumley, daughter of Morning Plumley and they had one son Henry Emery, who was killed as a young man.
It was said that Berry and Hoke bought a tract of land of 20 acres more or less, probably closer to 100 acres than 20. Berry traded a hog rifle to Hoke for his and it was on that land that Berry built a log cabin, with a nearby log kitchen and married a wife, Millie Pruitt, just on the Southside of Glassy Mountain. There they reared their family, also shared a cemetery, school and possibly a church that shared in the school building. Hoke Emery married Lizzie Pruitt, Millie's sister.
It should be noted that the family of Will Emery has prepared an excellent document known as the Descendents of Willima P. Will Emery and Birdell Cabe Emery.
A one page reference to the John Pickney Emery family of the Ivy Hill community in North Carolina , a two page document by Squire Jeff Emory and four pages of the Benjamin Buckner family (These are John Pickney Emory's wife's family).
